Swine Flu : a trend we'd rather avoid

Depending on which news source you turn to today swine flu is either behind us or just about to decimate the world's population. Whatever eventuates its influence on the public's psyche is undeniable, and accordingly the fashion industry is jumping onto the bandwagon. Introducing swine flu chic; the one fashion trend we hope you avoid more than double denim.

If one bit of swine flu chic has risen above all else it is undeniably the sudden prevalence of 'designer' face masks, with the none-too-subtle 'oink!' face mask being the most obvious. I can't see these taking off on the streets of New York or Melbourne, but won't be in the least surprised if to see them on many a face in the Far East, particularly Japan.

There have also been more subtle influences of the pandemic-that-may-never-be upon fashion; take COACD's handy tips on avoiding swine flu all, mixed in another set of pictures in their continuing exposure emerging model talent. Model Brendon's face may be obscured, but it's an image that makes an impact.

fashion Kate Moss at the MET 2009 Costume Institute Gala

Sparkling with her usual display of effortless elegance, Kate Moss attended the MET 2009 Costume Institute Gala wearing a gold lame Marc Jacobs dress. The dress featured both the one-shoulder and backless trends, while the matching turbanesque headpiece brought an element of the ethnic to the ensemble.

designer news Jessica Stam in Rodarte at MET 2009 Gala

I don't think I've ever seen model Jessica Stam looking quite so gorgeous. Wearing a one-shouldered dress from Rodarte Autumn(Fall)/Winter 2009/2010, she was the queen of understated elegance at the 2009 MET Costume Institute Gala. The strength of Stam's look comes from her perfect choice of makeup and hairstyle; the classic 40s-style wave is the perfect hair trend on her, while the black kohl brings out her blue eyes beautifully.

Latest fashion Desert Fox: Elle UK, June 2009

When we named heels with ankle straps as a 2009 shoe trend, there was little doubt which example of the trend was my favourite: the super-high, tripple-strapped heel by Gucci. The June 2009 issue of Elle UK features the Gucci heels on model Elise Crombez, in a great shoot titled 'Desert Fox'.
